Diabetes
Yoga and Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly.
Glucose comes from the wide range of food we eat and from the liver which makes glucose.
Insulin is a hormone, vital for life, produced by the pancreas and it that helps the glucose in the blood stream to enter cells in the body to be used as fuel.
Types of Diabetes
- Type 1 diabetes
This develops when the body is unable to produce insulin.
- Type 2 diabetes
This develops when the insulin produced by the pancreas is either not enough or the insulin produced does not work properly. This is referred to as insulin-resistance.
The main aim of treatment of both types of diabetes is to achieve blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels as near to normal as possible. This, together with a healthy lifestyle, will help to improve wellbeing and protect against long-term damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and major arteries.
One of the areas of the body that need to be worked well is the core of the body. Not for the appearance (six-pack) but more for suppleness. The belly area houses core body organs, one of which is the Pancreas.
When there is too much glucose in the blood stream, the pancreas produces insulin to enable the sugar to be deposited into the cells for immediate use or to be stored as fat.
In Yoga we do certain postures to work the pancreas to enable it to work more efficiently.
